Cameyo: Virtualize Your Applications And Make Them Portable (Windows Only)

cameyo-logoPortable applications are useful in that you can run it in any computers and without installation. The bad thing is, not every applications can be made portable. One of the solutions that we reviewed previously is to make your Windows XP portable so you can carry all your apps around. However, that can be an overkill for many. Most of the time, we just need access to a few applications, not the whole OS. This is where Cameyo comes in to fill the gap.

Cameyo is a Windows only software that virtualize your applications into a single exe file. With this virtualize application, you can bring it around and use it in any computers, without installation.

Usage

Download and install Cameyo

Run Cameyo. Click “Capture installation”.

cameyo-capture-installation

It will first take a snapshot before the installation.

cameyo-preinstall-snapshot

When the Proceed with installation message appear, proceed with your application installation.

cameyo-record-install

In this example, we will install the Opera browser in our Windows system.

cameyo-opera-installer

When the installation is completed, simply click the “Install done” button.

Cameyo would then proceed to take a post installation snapshot to determine the files/folders that have changed. This could take some time. It is best to leave your system alone during this process

cameyo-postinstall-snapshot

Once it is done with the snapshot, it will prompt you to enter the identification detail.

cameyo-before-packaging

Lastly, it will package the executable into a virtual file.

cameyo-packaging

You should now see a folder in your desktop. Inside the folder should contain the executable file of the application that you have just installed.

cameyo-exe-folder

Now, you can copy this folder to your thumb drive, bring it around with you and access to your applications wherever you are.

Conclusion

Personally, I have not test every single application in my system, so there is no way to know if Cameyo works for all. I have tested Opera, Safari browser and Filezilla. The post-installation snapshot of Safari took far too long, so I cancelled it before it was completed. As for Opera and Filezilla, they work fine.

Test it out and let us know which applications work and which one don’t.

How to Recover Data and Partitions for Free with TestDisk

testdisk-smallSometimes in the world of free software, you have to make the best of what’s available. Sometimes what’s available isn’t all that great. When I suddenly lost some critical data as a result of a corrupted drive, I thought I’d have to shell out some potentially serious cash for a high-quality recovery utility. In my research to find the right program, I came across mention of TestDisk, an amazingly handy free utility which has saved me from the loss of a lot of data (not to mention a rather angry spouse). It’s a command line tool so there’s no fancy GUI, but the menu-driven interface makes the recovery process quite simple, and it can handle FAT, NTFS, ext2-4, and more.

Note: Not all recovery features will be exactly the same across all filesystem and partition types.

Getting TestDisk

While it is a Linux utility, you don’t actually have to have Linux installed to use it. There are several live CDs you can use to run TestDisk, and a full list can be found here.

If you’re not familiar with Linux or live CDs, don’t let that put you off. Many of the systems in the link above are very user-friendly and require no special knowledge. You download the .iso file, which can range from a few MB to a few GB and use your favorite burning software to burn it to CD/DVD. Make sure you select the Burn Image/Burn ISO or similar sounding option, as it will not be bootable if simply dropped onto the CD as an ordinary file. When complete, reboot your PC with the CD in the drive and your live Linux should start up.

If you’re already running Linux, TestDisk is likely available in your distribution’s online repositories. Ubuntu users, for example, can fetch it with

sudo apt-get install testdisk

or use the Ubuntu Software Center.

Normal Scan

When you launch TestDisk, you’ll be asked a question about how to handle log files. As this is the first time we’re launching it, we just need to create a new one.

testdisk-start

That’s not a bad screenshot, the program really is that odd grey color.

Once the program has detected your drives, you’ll be given the option to select which of them needs the recovery. This list also includes external media such as USB hard drives, so be certain you’re selecting the right device. Additionally, the size value must be accurate if you want a proper recovery. Anything else indicates a problem detecting the drive and will result in a recovery failure.

testdisk-selectdevice

After that you’ll select the type. Changes are, you want the first option, Intel. Anything else and you’d probably know it.

testdisk-partitiontype

Now, you choose the action you want to perform. For a normal recovery attempt, just choose Analyse. We’ll cover the other options in a moment.

testdisk-selectaction

testdisk-selectpartition

Hopefully, TestDisk will find your lost partition(s) and give you the option to write the recovered data to disk. If not, you may be in for a deeper scan. This will search your drive cylinder-by-cylinder in an attempt to find the lost data. If you’ve gotta do a deep scan, get yourself come coffee and a magazine. It’ll take a while.

Additional Options

If you had chosen Advanced instead of Analyse in the menu shown above, you’d have some other very handy options at your disposal.

testdisk-advanced

Boot will make an attempt at recovering the boot sector of the selected partition. Image will let you create a image file from the selected partition, and other partition types can have several other options depending on their type.

Most of TestDisk’s other options, such as Geometry and MBR Code, can be potentially hazardous to your system if used improperly. Unless you know precisely what you’re doing, it’s recommended that you avoid these sections.

Conclusion

Since the first time I ever used it, I knew TestDisk would make its way into my top recovery tools, right along with Clonezilla and Super Grub Disk. In my experience, it has actually outperformed a few of the paid recovery tools I’ve used in my years as a PC tech. After all, it’s a nearly-universal, full featured, highly effective data recovery program that can be run from a live CD – for free. What’s not to love?

How To Add Share Buttons To Blogger

share-mainSimply writing blog posts are no longer enough. You must ensure that your content is easily shareable across all the major social media networks. To make this easier, Blogger has recently added a “share buttons” option. Adding these buttons to your Blogger blog is fairly straightforward. Navigate to your Blogger dashboard, select Design, follow by Edit under the “Blog Posts” box and a popup will open. This popup will have a “Show Share Buttons” option, select this and select Save in the popup and Save on the main page.

share-blogger

Next to your blog post the share buttons will appear.

share-post

However, the default share buttons are quite limited in functionality as they do not allow you to select the social media networks you want displayed and more importantly they do not have the Facebook “Like” or Twitter “Tweet” buttons, which have become ubiquitous on the web.

Therefore, in this article I will describe how to add share buttons to your blog from a variety of social media networks, specifically from Facebook and Twitter.

Set-Up AddThis

There are a number of ways to add share buttons to your blog, including a variety of web services and even from the official Facebook and Twitter sites, however I prefer to use AddThis as it is simple and highly configurable.

Once you have registered for an account, select “Get AddThis” from the main page to start customising your buttons.

share-addthis

You will then be presented with some HTML code to add to your website. If you add this code to your blog, the share buttons will look like the Preview. However, if you want to customise your buttons further, select “Customize >“.

share-customise

Here you have more options for selecting the platform you want to add the buttons to and their style. Select the Style you want for your buttons. Instead of selecting Blogger under Platform, selectWebsite. This will ensure that the full HTML code of the share button is displayed and you can tweak it later. The styles may seem limited at this point, but select the one that is closest to how you want your share buttons to look like and select Grab It to copy the code.

share-customise2

You must now paste this code into your Blogger blog. To do so navigate to your blog’s dashboard, select Design, follow by Edit HTML. The full HTML code for your blog will appear. Next, select Expand Widget Templates.

share-blogger-html

Depending on where you want the share buttons to appear on your blog, you can add the HTML code from AddThis accordingly. I like to have the buttons just below the actual text of my blog, so I place the AddThis code below the <div class='post-footer'> tag.

share-html

Once you have pasted the code in your desired location, select Save Template and view your blog.

share-addthis-blog

Customising AddThis Share Buttons

I promised earlier that AddThis allows you to customise your buttons beyond the limitations of those on Blogger. To do so, you will have to edit the AddThis HTML code.

The default code is as follows:

<!-- AddThis Button BEGIN -->
<div class='addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style '>
<a class='addthis_button_preferred_1'/>
<a class='addthis_button_preferred_2'/>
<a class='addthis_button_preferred_3'/>
<a class='addthis_button_preferred_4'/>
<a class='addthis_button_compact'/>
<a class='addthis_counter addthis_bubble_style'/>
</div>
<script type='text/javascript'>var addthis_config = {&amp;quot;data_track_clickback&amp;quot;:true};</script>
<script src='<a href="http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js#pubid=ra-4dcb70d5116e62a2'">http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js#pubid=ra-4dcb70d5116e62a2'</a> type='text/javascript'/>
<!-- AddThis Button END -->

General Functions

The first portion of the code <div class='addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style '>controls the general functions of the buttons. I recommend you add the following to this tag:

<div class=’addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style’ expr:addthis:title=’data:post.title’ expr:addthis:url=’data:post.url’>

The expr:addthis:title='data:post.title' portion of the code automatically displays the title of your post in everything you share. So, for example, if you click on the Twitter share button, the Tweet will be formatted to display the title of the current blog post. Similarly, theexpr:addthis:url='data:post.url' portion ensures that the permanent URL of the current blog post is attached to your shared content.

So, if you were to select the Twitter share option, your tweet for the post would look like this:

Make Tech Easier http://t.co/nCLRCEE via @AddThis

First, the title of the blog post is displayed, then the URL and finally the original tweeter.

Additional Buttons

The next set of options <a class='addthis_button_preferred_1'/> allows you to select the types of share buttons you wish to display. I recommend having a look at the services list to see the full list of share buttons available (most social networks are available and you can request for more to be added).

To change a share button simply amend this tag with the name of the service you wish to display. For example:

a class=’addthis_button_tweet’ tw:via=’abhiroopbasuu’/>
<a class=’addthis_button_facebook_like‘/>

This will display the Tweet button and the Facebook “Like” button in place of the default “preferred” buttons. Additionally, the tw:via='abhiroopbasuu' portion ensures that when someone shares my posts using Twitter, the post is displayed as originating from my username (instead of @AddThis).

Final Code

My AddThis code, incorporating the settings from above, is as follows:

<!– AddThis Button BEGIN –>
<div class=’addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style’ expr:addthis:title=’data:post.title’ expr:addthis:url=’data:post.url’>
<a class=’addthis_button_tweet’ tw:via=’abhiroopbasuu’/>
<a class=’addthis_button_facebook_like’/>
</div>
<script type=’text/javascript’>var addthis_config = {&quot;data_track_clickback&quot;:true};</script>
<script src=’http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js#pubid=ra-4dcb70d5116e62a2? type=’text/javascript’/>
<!– AddThis Button END –>

On my blog it appears as follows:

share-final

Conclusion

The customisation options on AddThis are limitless and it supports a vast number of services. It is impossible to outline every single combination, however I would recommend you try out a few different options and see what works and what looks good.

Settings You Need To Install Mac OS X Snow Leopard in VirtualBox

virtualbox-mac-mainIf you need to test a software on Mac OSX, and it is not justifiable for you to get a new Macbook, a good way is to install the Mac OSX as a virtual machine in your Windows (or Linux) based PC. Both the two popular virtual machine software – Virtualbox and VMware, support Mac OSX installation as a virtual guest, but in this article, we will deal with Virtualbox.

Why Virtualbox?

You may be wondering why you should choose VirtualBox instead of using VMware. Well, for one reason – you will save yourself a good bit of cash, since VMware can costs you a pretty penny, and VirtualBox is a free solution. Of course, free is not enough to make a product worth your while. It needs to have other traits, such as stability and a development team that support it with regular updates. VirtualBox provides you with both of these things, so you can use it with confidence that you will not end up with problems a year down the line.

What Do You Need On Your System

In order for this system to work, you need to have a setup that has either an Intel or AMD processor that is capable of supporting hardware virtualization.

What You Need to Do

First off, if you have not installed VirtualBox, now would be a really good time to get it. Go toVirtualbox website and download the installer for your OS. If you do not own a Snow Leopard disc, you might want to search for a OSX86 iso file and download it.

Step 1: Open the VirtualBox software and click the “New” button. This will launch the ”create a new VM” wizard tool which is designed to walk you through the setup.

virtualbox-new-vm

Step 2: Give your new VM a name (I named it Mac OSX). Choose “Mac OS X” in the “Operating System” dropdown menu, and then select “Mac OS X Server” from Version dropdown menu, which you will find in the same area.

virtualbox-vm-name

Step 3: Assign the amount of memory you want to allocate to the new operating system. The maximum in VirtualBox is 1500MB, but you will want to temper this figure based on what you need to do with the system, how much memory you have in total on the system, and the types of programs you intend to install on under the new OS.

Update: The maximum in VirtualBox is not 1500MB. You can allocate up to 2GB if you have enough memory in your system.

virtualbox-memory

Step 4: Make a new hard drive for your VM. If you are not sure how much you need, choose the “Dynamic” option. This will allow the system to expand as your needs do. If you choose the “Static” option, be sure that you know what you need and allot accordingly. Then click on “Next” to finish up with the wizard.

virtualbox-new-hdd

virtualbox-dynamic-hdd

Step 5: Click on “Settings” and then “System”. Uncheck the box next to the words “Enable EFI (special OSes only)”.

virtualbox-settings

virtualbox-select-efi

Step 6: Choose “Storage” from the menu on the left and choose the word “Empty”, you will see it under the OSX.vdi. You will see a folder with a green arrow. Click on it and a new window will open. Click on the plus sign. You will now be able to find the OSX86 iso that you downloaded earlier in this process. Once you have highlighted it, click on the “Select” button and then click on “OK”. Finally, click on the main start button to begin the process.

Step 7: When all of this is done the VM should start booting. You will be asked to select a language. Do that and click on “Next” then “Continue and Agree”. The next screen will show you the words choose the 20GB VBOX HARDDISK, and click on the “Erase” button.

Step 8: Click on “Install” to begin your installation. When the installation is done click the Right-Ctrl key and unmount the CD/DVD drive for now. Then restart the VM. OSX should begin to boot.

There you have it Mac OS X Snow Leopard running in VirtualBox on your Windows-based machine.

D7: The Only Tool You Need To Troubleshoot Your Computer

D7-mainAs a computer geek and an IT administrator, I always get calls from people about their broken systems and I always have my USB first aid kit with me in order to troubleshoot any problems regarding problematic or broken systems. Today I’m going to talk about a portable utility which serves as a Swiss army knife for IT administrators and even for technical people who love to troubleshoot systems.

D7 is an all in one portable tool for troubleshooting and tweaking systems. Let’s talk about the features of D7. This article will be a little longer as the features of D7 can’t fit in a few paragraphs.

When D7 is started for the first time, you’ll need to agree to the terms and conditions and then a configuration window will appear when starting D7 for the first time.

D7-shell-config

You can configure different options in the configuration window. The main D7 window will consist of different tabs which have different set of functions and features. Let’s talk about each tab separately. But first of all, I’ll give some information about the universal menu buttons which are located at the top right of D7 window.

Universal Menu Buttons

D7-universal-menu-buttons

There are menu buttons on the top right screen of D7 which include different troubleshooting tools. The first button is the Internet button. It includes many tools to test the internet. D7 also comes with its own browser which can be very helpful in resolving Internet issues. You can also test Flash, Shockwave, Java, Silverlight, PDF and SSL integration. D7 also gives links to download Microsoft Security Essentials and Microsoft System Update Readiness Tool.

The next menu button is User Account Control Settings in which you can configure user logon and user account control options.

The next menu button is the most critical one as it includes all the crucial Windows tools in one place. The tools include MSConfig, Registry Editor, Group Policy Editor, Task Manager, Device Manager etc.

You can also open different important directories with two clicks from the Open Folders menu button.

The last menu button is related to shutdown and restarting the computer. D7 can let you forcefully restart your system if it hangs during shutdown process. You can also delete or replace a file on reboot.

The items in the Tools menu button will only work when the third party tools are copied to the D7 folder. The tools include Process Explorer, Process Monitor, RegLite and BlueScreenView.

Info Tab

D7-info-tab

The first and default tab shows the information about the computer. The information includes system information including Operating System installed, page file, uptime, system name, user, installation date etc. and hardware information which includes the CPU, RAM, Video, Motherboard and BIOS information. You’ll also get alerts from Event Log, Device Manager and Windows Updates.

Maintenance Tab

D7-maintenance-tab

The main benefit of maintenance function of D7 is that it can integrate our favorite programs within itself. It will be able to integrate CCleaner, Malwarebytes, Defraggler, DataGrab, Piriform Recuva, TCP Optimizer etc. D7 Auto Mode will automatically run all the maintenance utilities that are installed and integrated with D7.

Integrating 3rd party apps in D7

Integrating 3rd party apps in D7 is very easy. Since D7 is portable software, the folder of D7 will contain everything related to D7. In order to integrate a 3rd party app, you’ll need to create a folder called “3rd Party Tools” in the main D7 folder and then put all the third party apps in their respective folders. For example, if you want to integrate CCleaner, the directory structure will look like this:

D7\\3rd Party Tools\\CCleaner

Integrating Recuva will make the folder structure like this:

D7\\3rd Party Tools\\Recuva

There will be no folder for files from Sysinternals. For example, if you want to integrate ProcessExplorer, it will go to D7\\3rd Party Tools\\psexec.exe

Repair Tab

D7-repair-tab

Repair tab will let you repair the most sensitive Windows issues which are usually corrupted by viruses and malware. For example, D7 will let you examine and modify the Hosts file, clear proxy settings, renew IP given by DHCP, reset network interfaces, repair Winsock and many more.

Tweaks Tab

D7-tweaks-tab

Tweaks tab will let you tweak many different Windows settings majorly related to the user interface. These tweaks can also be helpful in troubleshooting a corrupted system. For example, many viruses will disable “Show Hidden Files And Folders” setting and will not let you enable it. You can enable the settings through the tweaks tab.

Malware Tab

D7-malware-tab

This tab should be handled with great care as it can destroy the system if used improperly. You should note that D7 does not include an automatic malware remover. Instead, it will tell you what is suspicious and what to fix in your system. It will help you create whitelists and blacklists in order to fight malware properly. In order to use this function, you should read the full documentation about Malware tab.

Offline Tools Tab

D7-offline-tools-tab

Offline Tools tab will be used specifically for the problematic computer. If the computer isn’t booting, then D7 will be able to run from a PE environment run from a CD/DVD. Through Offline Tools tab, you’ll be able to edit the registry of Windows without booting into it, check the MBR records, remove policies, reset hidden volumes, get minidumps for further analysis and many other functions.

Problems with D7

There are some problems with D7 which you need to know before using D7:

  • D7 is usually slow when starting. It usually becomes unresponsive but after sometime runs properly.
  • D7 is only intended for very experienced professionals as most of its functionality can break the computer if used improperly.
